Preparing an ERC or NIH submission. Building a World Bank or foundation bid. Same deadline pressure, same panel logic.

Paulius Yamin, PhD — Policy Fellow, Harvard Kennedy School. $18M+ in research and international development funding secured across a 15-year career. 500+ proposals reviewed, including for the ERC and the UK ESRC. Consultant for the World Bank, USAID, OECD, and UN agencies.
Funding Proposal Secrets
Created with 15 years of experience on all sides of the funding table
If you're preparing an ERC, NIH, Horizon, or UKRI submission:
We were never taught this. We were taught to explain an idea, a method, a concept, well enough to publish it.
We were never taught to write for the funder's priorities instead of our own.
This session covers what I've learned writing, evaluating, and selecting research proposals at UPenn, the Paris Institute for Advanced Study, and as an ERC and UK ESRC evaluator.
If you're building a World Bank, UN, or foundation bid:
We've written hundreds of proposals. Our livelihoods, and our team's, depend on them.
And still, most of us have never made sense of how a funder decides which ones survive.
AI has raised the number of applicants for every call, and with it, the competition. Standing out is harder than it was two years ago. With the right method, it's also more achievable.
Feedback From Past Sessions
"Many talented people have good ideas and a strong desire to contribute to science and society, but they struggle to access the knowledge and resources needed to compete internationally.
Your seminar was valuable because it offered insights that are rarely available to researchers in my environment."
Fatima / Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships candidate, Pakistan
"As a researcher, I really struggle to really develop this sort of strategic expertise that researchers do not have. We are trained to write scientific papers, but if I think of our training as PhD students, there is not much on writing grants. I really liked the idea of framing professional advice in terms of strategies, but also in the ´secrets´ that are not often discussed but can be very useful for researchers when they have to write grants."

Public registration opens in August. The priority list will be notified first, and will get two of the key tools we'll use in the session, immediately: the Credibility Ladder guide and AI prompt, built to check whether a call is a good fit and where you honestly stand on it.
